'Doom 4' Update: Unreleased Trailer reveals different direction of the Franchise; Game is a cross between 'Call of Duty' and 'Gears of War'

Doom 4's unreleased trailer reveals a different take of the franchise. The trailer shows more of a Call of Duty or Gears of War, instead of the usual Doom aesthetics.

Doom 4 was announced to be in development way back in 2008 by the then lead developer at id Software. Years later, the fate of the iconic first-person shooter are pointed towards the game being in development hell. Along the years, id Software was acquired by Bethesda Softworks and it has been known that the project was scraped and was rewritten from ground up in late 2011. The reason for this is because the developers thought that Doom 4 was not Doom enough and only by restarting the production will ever steer the project into the right direction.

The Doom 4 trailer video shows a war-torn European city with a number of armed people, either soldiers or armed civilians, it is not really clear. No footage of the monsters from Hell are seen. Clearly, this is not the same as what the franchise is known for: claustrophobic and isolated. Doom is known for pitting the players in a facility corridors, and being alone. Though there are no gameplay shots, it can be postulated based on the leaked trailer that Doom 4 may have some squad-based gameplay being introduced. The setting revealed in the trailer veers toward having an open world shooting gallery. Doom 4 looks to follow the aesthetics established by Call of Duty, Rage, and Gears of War.

Tim Willits, id Software studio director, added that Doom 4 did not have a "soul" or a "personality". He does not blame the aesthetics, nor the programming, he just found the approach in developing Doom 4 does not give birth to "spirit".

Doom is currently in development by id Software and serves as a reboot of the classic game. Bethesda Softworks is the publisher, and the game is set to be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There is no release date yet.
