Samsung filed a patent on Q3 2014 conceptualizing a smartphone-notebook hybrid device that can run both Android and Windows operating systems at the same time. This will have a "docking apparatus," which will serve as one of its main features.
U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently revealed a Samsung patent filing about an "all-new dual OS operating system hybrid device." The concept of the patent shows an invention of an Android-run smartphone (or phablet), such as the rumored Galaxy Note 5, that could automatically run the Windows operating system, such as Windows 10, when being "docked inside a notebook-like shell companion component."
This futuristic device, perceived to be a "smartphone-notebook hybrid," could access the internet without needing a Wi-Fi connection or a mobile internet Key. It can also recharge the smartphone, making it appealing to busy executives and students.
The smartphone-notebook hybrid device (also understood as a new kind of notebook) will have a "docking system," where a phablet and a "docking apparatus" are separated from each other. The phablet will have to be placed on the "docking apparatus." See image.
Imagine a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 phablet being put on a "docking apparatus" of a Dell Vostro 15 3000 Series notebook.
When the phablet is put on the "docking apparatus" of this new kind of notebook, the smartphone could show two possible states. The first state is that the phone's display could run a Windows operating system, and can extend its contents on the hybrid notebook's screen. However, it could also make the phablet run an Android OS while the hybrid notebook having the Windows operating system.
The second state could make the phablet's display as the notebook's touchpad.
This hybrid device will have the CPU and components of the phablet as its brains. Its first operating system may be Android, with Windows as its second OS. Specifically, the first operating system could be an Android OS driven in a smartphone or other similar devices. The second OS may be a Windows operating system driven in a notebook PC, a desktop PC, and others. The Samsung patent also made this new kind of notebook have the capability to incorporate other operating systems.
Other details also include the system's controller to have the option to determine the "operation state" of the phablet to be a notebook PC state or to be a "dual display state" if the user wants to display only two images.
The "docking apparatus" can be connected or disconnected. If it is disconnected, the bios may continue with "booting under the first operating system (Android). If connected, the bios may "proceed with booting under the second operating system (Windows)." Hence, one of the main features of this new smartphone-notebook hybrid (or new kind of notebook) is the "docking apparatus."
The timing of the product could not be determined as Samsung filed their U.S. patent in Q3 2014. Nevertheless, it shows that the successors of Galaxy Note 5 and Windows-run notebooks, such as Dell Vostro 15 3000 Series, would be combined.
