Matthew McConaughey on Gus Van Sant’s “The Sea of Trees:” Everyone is going to muse about its meanings

Gus Van Sant is known for his eclectic style in filmmaking and "The Sea of Trees" is another addition to his track record. The movie recently premiered at the annual Cannes Film Festival, which received negative reactions from critics and audience. Matthew McConaughey, who received praises for his performance at the "Dallas Buyers Club" disappointed the audience over what seems to be a 'risibly long-winded' movie. Did he ruin his acting career following his appearance in "The Sea of Trees?"

Matthew McConaughey signed up for the role of Arthur Brennan, a science teacher who decides to journey into the Aokigahara forest in Japan to take his own life in Gus Van Sant's movie, "The Sea of Trees" in 2014. Back then, McConaughey confidently predicted that the film would leave audiences wondering about the movie even as they leave the confines of the movie theatre.

"Everyone is going to leave the theatre and have their own walk and talk through the parking lot to muse about its meanings, what it was about and what it wasn't, what was real and what was a dream," McConaughey told EW in September.

Now, the 45-year-old actor may have accurately predicted the outcome of his movie, as the audience at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival walked away from his film talking about how bad the movie was.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said, "The Sea of Trees" was "a fantastically annoying and dishonest tear-jerker." Variety said the movie was "risibly long-winded," as McConaughey's character continues to dread in his own life without giving too much of a highlight to his co-lead Ken Watanabe.

Does McConaughey's performance in "The Sea of Trees" ruin his track record as an actor? Maybe yes, maybe not. The "Interstellar" actor recently commented on the harsh reviews his latest film has received from critics and said: "People have as much right to boo as to ovate."
