A new "Phone Companion" app was unveiled by Microsoft that would enable Windows Phone, Android phone, and iOS device owners to use Cortana, play music anywhere, show up stored photos, and more.
Windows said that the "Phone Companion" app, which is a built-in to Windows 10, will help users connect their Windows PC to "whatever phone you own - whether it's a Windows phone, Android phone, or iPhone." In other words, the "Phone Companion" app would connect a Windows 10 PC to a Microsoft Lumia 940, 2015 Google Nexus 5, or to an Apple iPhone 6s.
Once the "Phone Companion" app is launched on the PC, users can pick the type of phone they own - Windows phone, Android phone, or iPhone. Those who own a Windows phone won't be having a hard time using the "Phone Companion" app, but Android phone and iPhone owners will have to follow some "easy steps to get the right app on their phone" and make it function well in "conjunction" with their Windows 10 PC.
After following the "easy steps," owners can install OneDrive app, Music app, and OneNote on their PCs as well as on their respective smartphones, such as Microsoft Lumia 940, 2015 Google Nexus 5, and Apple iPhone 6s.
OneDrive app lets users to show up their stored photos from their respective devices in the Photo app of a Windows 10 PC. Music app will allow owners to store and access their music via OneDrive and "play it anywhere for free, on your iOS or Android Phone" as well as on their PCs. They can also "take a note wherever you are - notes you write on your PC in OneNote will show up on your phone. And any note you tweak on your phone will get synced to your PC."
The "Phone Companion" app will also help Android phone and iPhone owners install a "Cortana" app from Google Play or Apple App Store onto their respective smartphones. After installation, users will be able to utilize some of Cortana's features everywhere. Hence, future owners of 2015 Google Nexus 5 and Apple iPhone 6s can enjoy Cortana's functionality as reported by IBTimes.
Two new small machines will also be enabled to use some of Cortana's features, the ECS Liva Core and ECS Liva X2. These two tiny PCs will be launched on late July or early August that would run Windows 8.1, and will eventually upgrade to Windows 10. The two will have built-in microphones and will be the first to support Cortana.
Microsoft is set to release Windows 10 on July 29.
