‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 recap: Episode 9 horrified fans; Showrunner Dan Weiss defends it was “justified”

Shireen's death in 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 episode 9 was so far the most disturbing and the toughest death to watch yet. Burning your own daughter, needless to say, is the most gruesome thing you can do. Thus, fans took to social media to express their reactions over the Sunday's "The Dance of Dragons" episode. But, showrunner Dan Weiss defends that the scene was entirely justified.

If previous week's episode was about ice, Sunday's episode was all about fire. The story highlights the heat of Dorne, the flames of Daenerys's most unpredictable dragon, and a young princess burned alive by his father.

For those of you who have yet to watch Episode 9, 'The Dance of Dragons,' here's a preview trailer from HBO.

Sunday's episode of HBO's fantasy hit 'Game of Thrones' ended with a disturbing and stomach twisting murder. Stannis Baratheon, his military campaign failing as his troops froze in the snow, sacrificed his daughter Shireen in a last-ditch effort to change his fate. At the urging of his mistress, Stannis ordered the young teen burned alive.

This segment, of course, disturbed a lot of viewers. In fact, they took it to Twitter to air their reactions of the horrific event in 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 episode 9. Entertainment Weekly enlisted the reactions of some fans, which all have the same response- they were disturbed and terrified.

The Telegraph also wrote that Princess Shireen's death, burned alive by her own father Stannis Baratheon (on Melisandre's suggestion) as a sacrifice to the Lord of Light during episode 9, was one of the most upsetting scenes this series.

In an interview with EW, 'Game of Thrones' showrunner Dan Weiss answered fans' rage about the Episode 9. He said, "Horrible things happening to people in this show, and this is one that we thought was entirely [narratively] justified."

Weiss added, "I totally understand where that visceral reaction comes from. I have that same reaction. There's also something shitty about that. So instead of saying, 'How could you do this to somebody you know and care about?' maybe when it's happening to somebody we don't know so well, maybe then it should hit us all a bit harder."

Yes, episode 9 disturbed all fans senses. But it does not mean not to watch the series anymore. Share us your thoughts for Game of Thrones' Season 5 recap.
