"Sin City" Franchise Director Robert Rodriguez To Bring Live-Action "Johnny Quest" To The Big Screen

Warner Bros. has recruited "Sin City" franchise director Robert Rodriguez to turn the 1960's popular animated series "Johnny Quest" into a live-action movie.

Robert Rodriguez might be known for his action pictures like "Dusk Til Dawn", "Desperado", and "Sin City", and a few horror slates including "Planet Terror" and "The Faculty". However, the director has an impressive resume as well when it comes to family-friendly films having worked with "Spy Kids" and "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D", as what LatinTimes notes.

Now, the 46-year-old filmmaker is adding a new film to his family-friendly list as he is set to work for a big-screen adaptation of "Johnny Quest", a well-known animated science fiction adventure series which first debuted in 1964.

According to Deadline, Rodriguez will not only do the directorial duties as he is set to co-write the upcoming feature-length movie adaptation as well. Terry Rosio of "The Lone Ranger" and "Pirates of the Carribean" will be writing the script alongside Rodriguez, based on the Dan Mazeau's earlier draft.

The live-action version of "Johnny Quest" has been in development for years now which is rumored to include Zac Efron ("High School Musical", "The Neighbors") and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ("Furious 7", "San Andreas") as two of its lead stars. DigitalTrends says that many filmmakers including Andy Fick of "Race to Witch Mountain", Peter Segal of "Grudge Match" and Richard Donner of "Superman: The Movie" have tried to adapt the series to the big screen.

The animated series of "Johnny Quest" featured the titular boy hero in several adventures during his dad's travel around the world. It aired 26 episodes from 1964 until 1965, but was followed by revivals in 80's and 90's.

Warner Bros. has not disclosed the target release date yet but with the director already reigned, "Johnny Quest" is surely already nearing its big-screen premiere.
