Just over the weekend, the new film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl has made $210,000. The new movie, which made it to the Sundance Film Festival, will be expanded in other localities.

Variety reports that Me and Earl and the Dying Girl premiered in six markets and 15 theaters from Friday to Saturday, garnering $210,000 in ticket sales which is an average of $14,000 per screen. The said movie was also the top-grossing film in three movie houses in Brooklyn, Chicago and Washington D.C. and second or third best performer. Jurassic World was said to be Me and Earl and the Dying Girl's stiff rival.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which stars newcomers Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) and Thomas Mann (Project X), was described as warm, smart, with clever jokes. It had an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Frank Rodriguez, Senior Vice President of distribution at Searchlight, believes that more teenagers will watch the movie despite the presence of Jurassic World. He said it was perfect to have been shown in the summer.

After shown in 15 theaters in L.A., San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Toronto and Washington D.C., Searchlight plans to add 10 more markets this weekend, says Deadline. By June 19, it will be shown in 60 to 70 theaters.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is about Greg (the Me in the movie), a white teenage boy, his black friend Earl and their classmate Rachel who is dying from cancer. Greg and Earl are fond of making parodies of movies until they are requested to do a short film about Rachel's cancer situation. Wired says that these mini-movies are inspired by Martin Scorcese which the film's director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon previously worked with as a production assistant.

By July 1, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is expected to be screened in 600 to 700 locations.
