After the box office success of the 2014 live-action fairytale "Maleficent", Disney has already green lighted the development of second round for the Sleeping Beauty reboot. Screewriter Linda Woolverton is already being negotiated to do the writing duties again for "Maleficent 2" and it is reported that along with her comeback, Angelina Jolie who played the role of the titular character will be returning to the sequel as well.
Angelina Jolie is notoriously fickle when it comes to sequels as she prefers to involve on movies as both an actress and a filmmaker. Deadline notes that Angie did not star in any of her previous films' sequel such as "Salt" and "Wanted" which is why Disney can only hope for the actress to board the project.
Even though Hollywood is evidently packed with supremely talented actresses who could take over the 40-year-old star's role of the complex sorceress, the Mouse House believes that Angelina Jolie's poignant return as Maleficent is what most people would look forward to.
However, when Jolie was asked in an interview with Entertain This about wearing Maleficent's iconic horns again, she only hinted that the sequel can possibly happen. "Possibly... I don't know. I enjoyed it," she said. "I just feel like we did this one thoroughly and I don't think there'd be another. I feel like this is the one, if I was going to ever do a Disney one, this is the one I wanted to do. And I think we've done it well."
The Sleeping Beauty reboot was noted to have smashed the box office after earning $750 million worldwide, making the sequel a high priority for the studio's development team. While Jolie may not have a deal in place yet to put her in the upcoming sequel, it is clear that convincing her to get back into costume is Disney's priority before the project can really go forward.
At the moment, Angelina Jolie is already in the post-production period on her very own film "By The Sea" where she stars with her real-life husband, Brad Pitt.
