There is no returning for "The Returned." A&E dropped the axe on the Kevin Alejandro-led show just recently after its first season failed to draw large number of viewers. There is still a little hope though, for the fans of the series, which might be revived through streaming via Netflix.
The U.S. version of "The Returned" aired its pilot episode on A&E on March 9, 2015, which managed to garner 1.5 million viewers. However, the numbers continued to slide weekly ultimately drawing only 945,000 viewers when its debut season aired its last episode, reports Deadline.
"The Returned" is an adaptation of the French supernatural series titled, "Les Revenants," developed by Carlton Cuse. The throughout the show's 10-episode run, it told the story of the haunted town named Caldwell, where dead people reappear unharmed and alive.
During season 1's ultimate episode, Peter, played by Jeremy Sisto, discovered that Caldwell is not an isolated case as some towns also experienced the same mystic happenings. The bad news is, those towns already ceased to exist. The episode ended with a major cliffhanger as Simon runs back into town after seeing its destruction.
The story of A&E's cancelled series could still continue if only other networks or Internet streaming media will pick it up. Previously, Netflix sealed a deal with FremantleMedia International to launch "The Returned" as a Netflix original, as per Digital Spy's report. Can Internet streaming giant revive the show and continue the mystic story of Caldwell?
A&E's shortlived series got relatively fair reviews, with a 66% ratings from Rotten Tomatoes with an average of 7.6/10 from different critics. The site acknowledged that the show is overshadowed by its source material but is still creepy enough to compete with other shows under the same genre.
Netflix has not released any official announcement about whether or not they will pick up the show. But if it decides to revive "The Returned," there are enough stories in the mysterious town of Caldwell that were left hanging by the first season.
