The highly-anticipated Final Fantasy 7 remake will be more than just a cosmetic upgrade for the title, as new gameplay elements are set to be introduced as well.
News of the wildly-successful roleplaying game receiving game already sent shockwaves throughout the gaming industry when it was first revealed back at E3, and now more details about it are starting to emerge.
As it turns out, the remake will do more than just improve the game's appearance, as new plotlines are already in the works, according to Gamerant.
According to Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura, the team behind the game is planning on helping it evolve, and that means the introduction of entirely new elements. Nomura stopped short of revealing any specific plot developments concerning the Final Fantasy 7 remake, but he did say that they will be expanding the original story.
Nomura also indicated that the familiar battle system of Final Fantasy 7 may be overhauled for the remake, according to Playstation Lifestyle. According to Nomura, keeping the same battle mechanics while changing so much about the game would be bizarre, and thus that aspect of the remake needs to be addressed.
It's hard to tell right now how hardcore fans of the original Final Fantasy 7 will react to the changes, especially to potentially scrapping the old battle system altogether, but the plans do indicate a full-on commitment on the part of Square Enix.
In related news, Nomura also said he would be open to doing more remakes of Final Fantasy games, according to Twinfinite.
Nomura pointed out that with Final Fantasy 7 getting its own remake, it was weird that Final Fantasy 5 and 6 were still without their own. Those two games getting their own remakes will make even more Square Enix fans happy, but at this point, nothing is set in stone.
At the very least, players can look forward to making a return trip to Midgar when the Final Fantasy 7 remake is finally released.
