There hasn't really been much updates about the live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" ever since Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced that he is producing the project two years ago. The fans might already doubt that it will no longer be pushed through but recently, the actor has assured that the movie is definitely moving forward. However, it is now moving from Warner Bros. to New Line, along with other properties based on the DC-owned Vertigo comics.
During the Guys Choice Awards, the "500 Days of Summer" actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, has explained what is taking so long for the "Sandman" flick to hit the big screen. ". It's slow but steady," he told MTV News' Josh Horowitz. "It's a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they're brilliant. But they're not written as a whole. "
According to the actor-filmmaker, turning "Sandman" into a feature film is quite challenging as its graphic novel wasn't exactly written with a clear beginning, middle, and end that a movie requires. "It's not like 'Watchmen,' which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end. And to try to take that and make it into something that's a feature film - a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end - is complicated."
Gordon-Levitt's movie might be based on the comics but his adaptation of "Sandman" will be different than other big live-action adaptations that have been blasting through the box office over the last few years. "Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing s- up. This has nothing to do with that," Gordon-Levitt said.
As per Franchise Herald's report, he mentioned that the forthcoming film will not feature any punching as Morpheus did not do such thing in the comics. "It's going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary clichés. So that's why it's taking a lot of time to write, but it's going to be really good."
Meanwhile, the live-action adaptation of "Sandman" as well as the rest of Vertigo comics' properties is now moving away from Warner Bros. to the studio's smaller, genre-oriented label New Line. According to Slash Film, this is not the first time, a former WB project was moved to the studio as Stephen King's adaptation of "It" recently moved to New Line as well.
Though no release date has been set yet for the upcoming film, at least the fans can now rest easy knowing that the "Sandman" movie is in good hands.
