GoPro has just announced today their new portable action camera reinvented as the Hero4 Session. It is another first for GoPro when it comes to redesigning their camera, since they have introduced Digital Hero back in 2007.
Compared to GoPro's Hero4 Silver and Black cameras, the Hero4 Session ones weigh 40% lighter at 2.6 ounces, and are 50% smaller in size too. It can actually fit the palm of your hand, as it is only a 1 ½ -inch cube. In a review made in tech crunch, since the camera was made as a cube, GoPro made it easy for users to rotate the camera in its mounting frames while recording a video, as if it was fastened right side up. The Hero4 Session comes with a Ball Joint Buckle mount, but it can also fit the previous GoPro mounts.
Unlike the earlier released cameras, the Hero4 Session won't be able to record 4K Ultra HD videos due to its size. However, it can still shoot 1080p60, 720p100, and 1440p30 videos. That is equivalent to 8 megapixel stills which you can shoot in different modes, such as the single, burst, and time lapse options.
The Hero4 Session camera also boasts of features from the previous GoPro camera models. This includes the Auto Low Light mode, the SuperView mode which is used to capture wide-angle shots, and the Protune. It has also been built with a dual microphone system, whereas, the front microphone switches to the rear one when it detects a high amount of wind noise. The Hero4 Session also has a nonremovable battery, a micro SD card slot, and a micro USB port too.
While the other GoPro cameras require accessories and cases to keep them shockproof and waterproof, the Hero4 Session doesn't need any cases to protect it as it is already shockproof and waterproof on its own. Even without a case, the Hero4 Session can be submerged in water for as deep as 33 ft or 10 m, as the camera is encased in a waterproof body.
In a statement released by GoPro founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, in the demanjo website, he said, "With Hero 4 session, we challenged ourselves to produce the smallest, lightest, most convenient GoPro possible."
As for the control button, with the previous GoPro camera models, you have to click on the power button, then the record button to capture videos. With the Hero4 Session, once you click on the power button, it already starts recording videos. If you press the button long, you get to do a time-lapse recording. To save the video, press the button again and to turn the camera off.
In the article posted by pc mag, Hero4 Session will be released on July 12 of this year for $399.99. This is GoPro's most expensive one yet, but it is also the GoPro camera that is most user friendly and easy to operate with.
To quote Woodman, "Hero4 Session combines the best of our engineering and user-experience know- how to deliver our most convenient life-capture solution, yet."
