"Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" actor Tom Cruise revealed that he is determined to board the long-awaited "Top Gun 2" as Lieutenant Maverick, only if the project dials down the CGI jets.
Three decades since its box office-smashing premiere, the ever-quotable 1986 fast-mover flick is finally getting a sequel. Though still unofficial, "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" actor Tom Cruise, who played the lead role in the first installment, is expected to return as the iconic Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. However, the 53-year-old actor is only boarding the sequel with one condition.
In an interview with Extra, Cruise has revealed his interest in returning as Maverick in the "Top Gun" sequel only if there will be no CGI jets used. "If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it'd be fun to do, I'd like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets," he said. "If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun."
The original film was noted to have topped the box office with a total of $176 million earnings on a $15 million budget. Even though it earned mix reviews from critics, most of its viewers fell in love with the film. One of the things praised by many was the exciting aerobatic stunts pulled with the use of real-life fighter jets. These notable immersive scenes seem like what Cruise hopes to be brought back to "Top Gun 2"if ever it gets made.
As previously reported, Skydance Productions' head honcho David Ellison announced during a press tour for "Terminator Genisys" that a follow-up film to the 1986 film was already in the works, with a juicy part in store for Cruise's Maverick. Currently "Top Gun 2" is still in development with "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" writer Justin Marks working on the screenplay.
