Pacific Rim 2 is under way with its working title called "Maelstrom" and is said to start filming soon. Meanwhile, actor Charlie Hunnam revealed what he thought would have made the film even better and what he hopes to see in the second film.
It has been reported that director Guillermo Del Toro is set to start production for the sequel of his 2013 futuristic film after his gothic horror movie, Crimson Peak is finished. Filming will reportedly start for Pacific Rim 2 this November, in Pinewood Toronto Studios under the working title "Maelstrom". Although it has not been revealed yet, if the said working title will eventually be added in the film's official title.
Meanwhile, actor Charlie Hunnam who played the role of Raleigh Becket in the previous film, shared what he thought would have made the first film better. According to him, the technical side of the film added rigidity to it, "When it becomes very technical, those technical aspects create a rigidity to the process," he said. "Then all of the sudden, you have to find where your little place to fit into that process is, as opposed to the whole thing being about you." he added.
Hunnam also revealed that the previous film would have been better if its technical side was loosened a bit, "I think world creation and monster creation and all of that stuff is exciting as a secondary element of storytelling. When it becomes more important than storytelling, I get very nervous, and you sort of lose me a little bit. Although we tried very hard on Pacific Rim to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling." he explained.
He also added that he's looking forward to it being remedied in the second film. Hunnam also went on to say that he liked the first film, although more focus on the story would have made it even better. "Not to say I wasn't proud of the film. I really liked it, and I felt like it delivered exactly what it was supposed to. But I do feel like we could have maybe plumbed the depths of the character and the storytelling a little bit more."
Pacific Rim 2 is also written by Guillermo Del Toro, along with Travis Beacham, and Zak Penn. It is set to hit theaters on August 04, 2017.
