After decades of waiting, Top Gun 2 is finally in the works and here are details that have been released so far. Actor Tom Cruise hinted that he might do the film but demanded that there should be no CGI. David Ellison also revealed that the sequel's focus will be on fifth generation fighters and drone technology.
Next year, Top Gun 2 will be turning 30 since its first release, and finally, a script is now being worked on for its sequel. According to Skydance CEO David Ellison, writer Justin Marks has been hired for the script and is currently working on it, as reported by Movie Fone.
Also according to Ellison, the movie will explore the new world of drone technology and fifth generation of fighters, "When you look at the world of dogfighting, what's interesting about it is that it's not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out." He said.
"This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce so it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie." He also added.
Aside from that, Ellison also revealed that Tom Cruise will be holding a big part in the second movie. It also now seems like Cruise might soon be confirmed for the movie as he revealed to Reuters that he's willing to do the movie given that it will be made without CGIs. "It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets," Cruise said.
"It would have to be practical. I don't want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one." He added. It seems like Ellison and Cruise are on the same page though, as Ellison also previously said in that the movie will be shot practically and that he thinks that it should be released in 3D and IMAX.
According to The National, throughout the years, many times has it been reported that a sequel to the hit 1986 film is on the way, including that of Tony Scott, the first film's director's announcement in 2010 that the sequel is being planned on doing. However, Scott's death in 2012, was another one of other reasons for its delay.
More details about Top Gun 2 are expected to be released in the coming months. Jerry Bruckheimer is set to return to produce the film along with David Ellison. No release date has been given to the film yet as of writing.
