Michael Phelps not drinking until after 2016 Rio Olympics; “I need to do this the right way”

After a short hiatus in his swimming career having gone to court for DUI (driving under the influence), Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps vows to do it right this time. The American swimmer says he will not drink until after the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Michael Phelps has stated that even before he went to court, he already has challenged himself not to drink alcohol so that he can perform well in the Olympics next year, reports CBS Chicago. The fast swimmer is serious in becoming clean and sober. Aside from saying no to alcohol, the athlete is living a healthier lifestyle by going to bed early and getting enough sleep. He admits though that it can be hard avoiding alcohol but with a year left in his career, he is determined to make it.

Phelps has been suspended for 6 months after being arrested for drunken driving for the second time last September. This is the reason why he is not competing for the ongoing world championships in Kazan, Russia and will be in the U.S. Championships in San Antonio instead this weekend. Phelps enrolled in Alcoholics Anonymous and underwent 45 days of inpatient treatment.

The 30-year old swimmer has actually retired after the 2012 London Games but a year after, he decided to be back in the waters again. Now, he wants to end his career in a better way. Phelps though has not announced yet his plans after the Rio Olympics, says NBC.

Phelps has competed every summer since 2004 and currently has garnered 18 golds and 22 medals, reports Washington post. Aside though from his success, he has been arrested for other cases. He was 19 when he first got involved with DUI. At 23, he was caught smoking with a bong.

Despite this, Michael Phelps believes it is never too late to make things right.
