Director Guillermo del Toro recently confirmed the surviving original cast's return for "Pacific Rim 2". The upcoming sequel is scheduled to start production later this year for an August 2017 release.
With a number of characters taken off the table at the end of "Pacific Rim", fans are curious as to who exactly will be returning for its long-awaited sequel. Apparently, everyone who survived in the first movie is slated to appear in "Pacific Rim 2", Guillermo del Torro has revealed. "I think that everybody or most everybody that survived is back. The rest we killed. We killed half the cast," he told Slashfilm.
This confirms the comeback of the film's front man, Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy"), whose exclusion in the second run has swirled online for months since the sequel was announced. Hunnam, who plays the role of the washed-up Jaeger pilot, Raleigh Beckett, is said to be returning with Rinko Kikuchi's ("Babel") Mako Muri. Movie Webb predicts that "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" will also see the return of Charlie Day's ("Horrible Bosses") Dr. Newton Geiszler and Burn Gorman's ("The Dark Knight Rises") Dr. Hermann Gottlieb who were scientists obsessed with the Kaiju.
Cinema Blend reports that "Hellboy" star Ron Perlman may also be back as Hannibal Chau. It was noted that the 2013 film made it look like he was already dead but its post-credit scene revealed that he was very much alive. Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, on the other hand, is unfortunately not returning for Part 2. This is of course, assuming that the stars have officially boarded the project which is likely, as many of them still have a working relationship with its helmer. Hunnam and Gorman are noted to appear in del Toro's "Crimson Peak" prior to the highly awaited sequel.
"Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" is set to commence filming this fall for an August 4, 2017 premiere.
