'23 Jump Street' needs a new director as soon as possible. Previous directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller may back out of the project in pursuit of others lined up. However, they will still be returning as producers.
The directing duo seems to be in their busiest with several new projects under their belt, making it near impossible for them to take up the responsibility for the comedy series' sequel. According to Indie Wire, big production studios have been approaching them work on various projects - from tv series to big-budget films.
Lord and Miller are set to work on Sony's 'Spider-Man' animated big-screen adaptation, Lucasfilm/Disney's 'Han Solo' standalone film, Warner Bro.'s 'Lego Movie' sequel, as well as Fox's television series 'The Last Man on Earth'. If those don't seem to be overwhelming enough, the duo have backed out on offers for 'The Flash' and a 'Ghostbusters' reboot.
It hardly comes as a surprise that Lord and Miller have opted out of directing another 'Jump Street' movie because of schedules that are filled to the brim. In an interview with Slash Film, Miller confirmed that he and Lord are only going to return as producers for the series that they have helped create success for.
He announced the news during a Televisions Critics Association summer press tour. He said, "We are hard at work on 23 Jump Street, which I think we will probably just produce from a time standpoint... But we've been working really hard. We've got a really good first draft of a script in and we're really excited about it."
In a separate interview, Lord hinted at incorporating some ideas shown during the credits in '22 Jump Street'. He said, "[Rodney Rothman] had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of 22 Jump Street and do something that hadn't been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story."
Rothman is set to write the story behind the planned upcoming action-comedy film, according to We Got This Covered. Actors Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum may return on the big screen as Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko in medical school if rumors are indeed followed through.
During the end credits of the film's predecessor, the two are seen in various spoofs set in culinary school and even veterinary school. It is unclear whether the new plot would focus on any of these or would welcome a 'Men In Black' crossover as previously mentioned in other reports.
'23 Jump Street' is the third in the modern adaptation of a 1987 television series of the same name. The first film in the franchise was released last 2012 and received critical and commercial success.
