"Monster Hunt" is now the second highest-grossing movie of all time in China, outdoing 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and 2014's "Transformers 4". After earning more than $330 million in the second largest film market, the CGI/live-action fantasy epic now eyes "Furious 7's" number 1 spot after having its screening extended until September 15.
Citing a data from research group Entgroup, the Hollywood Reporter says the local-language juggernaut has grossed another $39.43 million in the previous week. Hong Kong director Raman Hui's movie has already earned a total of $330.32 million, with 230,828 showings and 6.67 million admissions. It has locked the number 1 box-office spot for 25 consecutive days and is now the first Chinese film to ever exceed 2 billion Yuan.
The movie's run which was recently been extended until September, now gives the film the potential to surpass the country's box-office topper, "Furious 7". According to Deadline, the late Paul Walker's most recent film has reached $391 million (2.43 billion Yuan) after it was rolled out to the Chinese theaters back on April. It exceeded "Lost in Thailand", the country's previous biggest local movie of all time, also overtaking the Chris Pratt-starrer "Jurassic World" ($229 million).
"Monster Hunt" centers Wuba, a monster born to be a king, and his mission in stopping an all-out monster civil war. It is helmed by the long-time Dreamworks animation worker Raman Hui, who made his feature film debut with this movie.
He is noted to have worked with the third installment of "Shrek" as a co-director, as well as the short film "Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five".The 40$ million 3D live-action/animated movie is produced by Bill Kong of Edko Films and stars stars Bai Baihe and Jing Boran.
