Frank Grillo is now reportedly in final negotiations with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions to star in the upcoming "The Purge 3". Slated for a July 2016 release, the franchise's third run may see Grillo's character pit against the system
What started as a 2013 low-budget horror flick, "The Purge" has evidently become a cultural phenomenon that has reached ever-expanding heights. Following its sequel "The Purge: Anarchy" which gained more positive reviews than its predecessor, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions are now set to release another installment. And it will not only be the franchise that will be brought back to the big screen, but also "Anarchy" star Frank Grillo. Variety has the scoop that the 50-year-old actor is already in talks to appear in "The Purge 3".
According to Cinema Bland, Grillo played the role of Sergeant in the franchise's second movie. His character was noted to have sought revenge to the person who was responsible to the death of his young son. His plans go awry when he gets roped into helping a group of strangers to survive the 12-hour Purge night. When given the chance for revenge, he changes his mind and winds up getting shot in the chest instead. On the closing scenes of the movie, it was implied that he was brought to the hospital in enough time to survive.
Though there is no official synopsis yet for the third run, Grillo teased that the fans may see his character pit against the system. "He was involved in law enforcement at a high level, and he gets involved with somebody else who's also politically charged, and they go after the system," he told Collider at the TCA '15 panel for his new TV series "Kingdom".
Grillo's commitment with his new show is said to possibly interfere with his ability to appear in the upcoming film. However, insiders claim that the scheduling is being worked out now for the convenience of the actor.
"The Purge 3" is slated to commence filming next month for a July 1, 2016 premiere.
