‘Warcraft’ Movie Update: Special effects artist reveals real weapons used in filming

Special Effects and makeup artist Richard Taylor says "Warcraft" actors used real weapons in filming the upcoming movie. The big screen adaptation of the popular video game is slated to open in cinemas on June 2016.

"The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" special effects and makeup artist Richard Taylor has recently discussed his work on the upcoming "Warcraft" movie. He revealed that the weapons and armors that were used by the actors were manually crafted by his production team. "In the case of the humans, King Llane and his army, they're all physical in the movie, they're playing against digital creatures, so they're wielding real swords, holding real shields, wearing real armor, and that all had to be manufactured," Taylor told Yahoo.

According to Youth Health Mag, he admitted that the real challenge was maintaining the balance of making the weapons realistic and assuring the actor's proper use of those props. "It required an incredibly fine balance, trying to get the look and canon of 'World of Warcraft' while still trying to get physical performance to come to the fore," he explained.

Producing those gears in a very short amount of time was also another challenge for his team as they are used to crafting the props manually like what they did to "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". "When this movie came along, it had a very short deadline and the material required an incredible precision," Taylor admitted. So instead of doing the usual handmade style, they opted for 3D printing, milling, laser printing and plasma cutting in order to complete the requirements on time.

The upcoming "Warcraft" movie will tell the tale of how Humans and Orcs met. As per Coming Soon, it will star Dominic Cooper ("Dracula Untold") as King Llane Wrynn, Travis Fimmel ("Vikings") as Anduin Lothar, Ben Foster ("Lone Survivor") as Medivh, Ben Schnetzer ("The Book Thief") as Khadgar, Ruth Negga ("The Samaritan") as Lady Taria, Clancy Brown ("Highlander") as Blackhand, Toby Kebbel ("Fantastic 4") as Durotan, Robert Kazinsky ("Pacific Rim") as Ogrim, and Daniel Wu as Gul'Dan, and Paula Patton ("2 Guns") as Garona.

"Source Code" director Duncan Jones will helm the film based on the screenplay penned by Charles Leavitt. Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Alex Gartner produced the film with Stuart Fenegan, Jillian Share, Brent O'Connor, and Blizzard Entertainment's Michael Morhaime and Paul Sams as executive producers.

Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment's "Warcraft" movie is slated to open in theaters on June 10, 2016.
