Chris Hemsworth is playing the role of a shipwrecked man in the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and he recently revealed the changes he and the cast members had to do for their roles. The Avengers star revealed that they starved for weeks in order to lose weight.
In the previous months, Hemsworth was reported to have consumed more calories and worked out twice a day in order to buff up for his role as Thor, however, in the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, the actor revealed that he went the exact opposite path.
Hemsworth revealed that in order to look like shipwrecked men, he and the cast members consumed less than 1000 calories a day. Christianity Daily qouted Hemsworth saying, "We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery,"
Hemsworth also said that during the process, they "kind of went insane" and weighed themselves every day. "We all felt like a bunch of supermodels, trying to get down in weight for a show, or something. That's all we spoke about. You've got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet, and who'd lost more weight, and who's looking really skinny. It's ridiculous!" he said as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
He also added that during the weeks of strict low-calorie diet, he frequently found himself looking for high-calorie foods such as pizza, hamburgers, chocolate, ice cream, and the likes. According to Movie News Guide, Keri Gans, a nutritionist and author of the book "The Small Change Diet", said that it's surprising that the actor was able to learn his lines and perform despite the fact that he was starving himself.
In the Heart of the Sea cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Owen Chase, along with Benjamin Walker as George Pollard Jr, and Cillian Murphy as Matthew Joy. It also includes Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson, Paul Anderson, Joseph Mawle, and Ben Whishaw. It is based on a non-fiction book written by Nathaniel Philbrick, and is set to hit theaters on December 11, 2015
