Filming for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2 is set to begin a couple of months from now and the director revealed that the survivors from the events that transpired in the previous film are set to come back. He also revealed that it will be set a couple of years after the events of the first film.
Del Toro previously confirmed that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will come back to reprise their roles as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, respectively and that they will be the main characters in the sequel. But as reported by /Film, Del Toro also recently revealed that Dr. Geiszler and Gottlieb will be joined by the other characters who survived in the first film.
According to the director, aside from Geiszler and Gottlieb, Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Becket will also play a big part in the sequel. "No, no, no, Charlie Day has a great part but so does Charlie Hunnam," he said. "I think that everybody or most everybody that survived is back. The rest we killed. We killed half the cast," Del Toro added.
Filming for the upcoming film is set to commence in November at Toronto. As cited in another report from the same publication, rumors have made their rounds that it might be filmed using the title "Maelstrom", although, it has not been confirmed yet whether it will remain to be a code name or be incorporated with the film's official title.
Meanwhile, pertaining to the film's plot, Del Toro previously stated that it will be different than the first one and it will take place a couple of years after the first film, as reported by Cross Map.
"a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after - what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump." he said.
Pacific Rim 2 is written by Travis Beacham along with Zak Penn and Del Toro. It is set to hit theaters in August 04, 2017. More details about the sequel are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
