‘Warcraft’ Movie the First of a Planned Trilogy? World of Warcraft Game Suffers Steady Decline from 12M to 5M Subscribers

'Warcraft' may be the first of a planned trilogy by director Duncan Jones. Unfortunately, the World of Warcraft video games was recently reported to suffer a steady decline from 12 million subscribers down to 5 million.

It doesn't come as a surprise that Jones plans to create two more follow-ups for his upcoming video game adaptation. According to io9.com, Jones planned to turn it into a trilogy banking on the positive reception of his yet to be released ambitious project. He announced this optimistic news during the San Diego Comic Con last July 8, 2015.

'Warcraft' is currently under post-production and is expected to be finished soon enough. Jones also revealed that he would like to continue with a small science-fiction project called 'Mute' before the release of his video game adaptation in the middle of next year and the beginning of work for a sequel.

In an article by IGN, it was revealed that the film had been in development since 2006. Its story line will focus on the origin behind the human-orc conflict and will be created in a way that both sides - the Alliance and the Hoard - seem to be the protagonists of their own stories. This may put a great divide between the contrasting loyalties of audiences. It was also reported that Jones wanted thematic elements that will resemble that of the film 'Gladiatior' with the complexity of 'Game of Thrones' and 'Avatar'.

Despite growing fascination over the live-action adaptation, some game veterans couldn't help but abandon the playing field. According Game Informer, Blizzard Entertainment may have announced a new expansion coming for the World of Warcraft multiplayer online role-playing game during Gamescom but subscriber numbers continue to drop.

They have dropped from 12 million last 2010 down to only 5.2 million in the recent months since the 'Warlords of Draenor' expansion pack's release last November. 'Warlords of Draenor' was met with numerous negative reviews with players saying they didn't get enough out of what they paid for. The expansion seemed to lack content and was inconsistent with previous good quality expansions.

The hugely popular game developed and published by Blizzard was first launched in 2004 and that more than 100 million accounts had been created since then. It was speculated that the latest expansion pack could help bring back subscribers who have long since left the fantasy Warcraft universe and the timely release of the live-action adaptation on June 10, 2016 may help the ailing enterprise.

'Warcraft' is an epic war fantasy film that will be released on June 10, 2016 under Universal Pictures. It will feature Travis Fimmel as Sir Anduin Lothar, Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, Toby Kebbell as Orc chieftain Durotan, Rob Kazinsky as Orgrim Doomhammer, and Paula Patton as Garona Halforcen among others.
