'Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales' mainstays Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom officially team-up to reprise roles as Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner respectively. Depp surprised fans in a character appearance at the recent Disney D23 Expo.
According to Metro.co.uk, the news long-time fans have all been waiting for was revealed at the D23 Expo on August 16, 2016 in Anaheim, California. Bloom, who was missing in the fourth film 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides', is all set to reprise his role as Will Turner.
The sequel will follow Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow, as he goes on a hunt to retrieve the legendary Trident of Poseidon to aid him in a battle with the film's villain Captain Salazar to be portrayed by series newcomer Javier Bardem. It was also reported that Geoffrey Rush will also return for Hector Barbossa but there was still no confirmation for Keira Knightley reprising her role as Elizabeth Swann.
In an article by Movie Pilot, it would be more logical to follow Knightley's character in future films as Elizabeth has always been a main protagonist for the longest time. However, she said in a past interview, "My time has definitely passed, I loved it, it was an amazing experience but I won't be going back."
It was rumored that Bloom's character would somehow overtake Depp's famous Jack Sparrow in the fifth film's plot but it had been questioned repeatedly whether Will Turner would have enough depth and complexity to carry the future of the franchise. Other speculations point to the introduction of new characters portrayed by Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites as a hint on the franchise's new direction.
Depp, meanwhile, took Disney's D23 by storm when he made a short yet entertaining appearance as the beloved Jack Sparrow, according to Variety. He joined Walt Disney's president of production Sean Bailey on stage during the first look at 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales'. He stayed in character as a drunken pirate, throwing grapes at the audience as well as fumbling for words in his so-called inebriation before being ushered off-stage by Bailey.
'Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales' is the fifth installment in the commercially and critically successful film franchise that will see the return of major characters. It is scheduled for a theatrical debut on July 7, 2017 and is directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as one of the producers.
