Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim 2" is the second movie scheduled for production this year. It is still a question however as to who will be returning on the sequel. While Original lead cast, Charlie Hunnam, from the first film is hopeful for a little bit more of a story that focuses on the character story build up.
Screen Rant reports that Guillermo Del Toro is having the sequel for "Pacific Rim 2" in the works. The second movie stems from the original Kaiju versus Jaegers in the first movie set to start filming on November 2015. However, Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have been pushing the release date four months back. While the production team has been working on the upcoming subtitle, the word "Maelstrom" might be in it for the sequel. Del Toro says that it will be a "quite a jump" from where the first movie ended. The threat of Kaiju's are nonexistent and the need for Jaegers to defend humankind falls into the same bracket. The once famous Jaegers are being used for a different purpose after that.
Charlie Hunnam who played Raleigh Becket in "Pacific Rim" is expectant of a storyline that would be more story-driven show compared to the first one. In another report by Screen Rant he points out the downside of having too much special effects in a movie. Hunnam is quoted saying "When [shooting] becomes very technical, those technical aspects create a rigidity to the process, then all of a sudden, you have to find where your little place to fit into that process is, as opposed to the whole thing being about you." He adds that although computer generated imagery is exciting it should only be secondary to story-telling.
There will be a lot characters in the first movie that wouldn't be coming back on "Pacific Rim 2" according to Guillermo Del Toro. Del Toro added that they killed half of the cast in the prequel while most of those who survived will be back on the sequel according to Cinema Blend. Both Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi will likely be back as Jaeger pilots. But the main lead casts in the second movie would be Dr. Gottlieb and Dr Newton Geiszler. Both mad scientists obsessed with Kaiju. Hannibal Chau will be seen as well.
The initial possible release date for "Pacific Rim 2" is said to be August 4, 2017. Until then there isn't much to work on when it comes to the whole plot. If ever the sequel will work more than expected remains to be seen. If ever it does Del Toro will probably make a third movie.
