After bringing issues in Pakistan on the table in the previous season of Homeland, Showtime President David Nevine announces that the fifth season explores issues fresh from the news making this season never the same with the previous. Homeland newest season now deals with ISIS, Charlie Hebdo attack, Ukraine conflict and more.
The Guardian reported that the fifth season of Homeland adopts the ripped-from-the- headlines approach which means developing plotlines of this spy series from the recent events taken from news that affects the world today. Homeland according to Nevine does not necessarily have to stay now and forever about the American relations in the Muslim world.
Nevine eyes the issues on ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) Charlie Hebdo attack, Edward Snowden and Vladimir Putin to be incorporated in the show to sustain interest of the audience and to give in greater relevance to the show. Executive producer Alex Ganza also sees the current Ukraine conflict as a possible story line in the next season of Homeland.
Going into the details, in the teaser was given by network to Entertainment Weekly Season 5 starts two years after where season 4 ends. By this time, the lead character Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) finds herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin. Carrie left CIA as an intelligence officer after being disillusioned for years of working on the cases of war in the Middle East and now works as a security head for a German philanthropist Otto Düring (played by Sebastian Koch) in his private security firm. Carrie finds herself in the inevitable fate of going back to the service she once abandoned.
The producers of Homeland templates Carrie's return to service story from their previous spy thriller Fox's 24 where its lead character Jack Bauer who from his exile is called back to service. Homeland banner line this season is indeed "The only way out is back in." as seen in the spilled story line of Carrie.
Homeland Season 5 seems to transform into a mixture of political thriller and historical fiction with Nevine and Ganza's new attack to the series. Homeland Season 5 premieres on October 4 in Showtime.
