Bill Murray has recently confirmed his cameo in Paul Feig's upcoming female-led reboot. However, the original "Ghostbusters" actor might play a brand new character that is out to debunk the new titular crew. The upcoming movie is scheduled to open in cinemas July next year.
It has been long rumored that Bill Murray would be making an appearance in the new "Ghostbusters" film; and just recently, the 64-year-old actor has finally confirmed this. In an interview with Vulture, Murray revealed that he has already filmed a cameo for Paul Feig's female reboot of the supernatural comedy franchise. "I like those girls a lot. I mean, I really do," he said, adding that he was approached by them for the said appearance. "They are tough to say no to. And Paul is a real nice fellow."
He is noted to have played the role of Dr. Peter Venkman, the leader of the titular team, in the 1986 film. However, instead of reprising the said character, it is rumored that Murray will be playing another role. The Rolling Stone reports that Murray may take on a small part as a debunker of the new "Ghostbusters" team. His former co-star Dan Aykroyd has already filmed his cameo as well, wherein he portrayed a conspiracy theory-obsessed taxi driver.
According to Metro, Murray earlier hesitated in returning to the franchise. In fact, he told David Letterman a few years back that starring in a third movie would be his "nightmare". But after thinking about it for years, he finally changed his mind. "It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls," he said. "And then I started to feel like if I didn't do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part]."
Apart from Murray, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth will also appear in the "Ghostbusters" reboot. Helmed by Feig, it is scheduled to open in cinemas on July 15, 2016.
