Android 5.1.1 Lollipop can now be downloaded to Xiaomi Mi 4 and Mi 3 smartphones through a custom ROM made by developer CyanogenMod. The rollout first started earlier this week with a few changes and additions and native Cyanogen features.
Top-selling Mi 4 and Mi 3 smartphones first get the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop among Xiaomi devices giving more improvements for hardware specs. The official over-the-air Lollipop update has not been revealed yet but a custom ROM CyanogenMod 12.1 can now bring in new software version with even better features.
The Lollipop-based custom ROM features better Material Design, device switch, supports for USB Type-C and fingerprint sensor, Android Pay, and the list goes on.
Before heading to the official download, make sure to charge the battery to at least 80 percent. Also, back up all stored data on the SD card since the update will remove all information.
To continue with the installation, here's a good way to go:
1. Download CyanogenMod Android 5.1.1 Lollipop CM12.1 custom ROM here and Google Apps here into PC. Download Cyanogen Recovery as well here.
2. Plug in Xiaomi Mi 4 or Mi 3 to PC using a USB cable. Ensure that the USB driver software is installed to PC before plugging.
3. Move all downloaded files to device's SD card's root folder memory.
4. Ensure the device is rooted and has installed ClockworkMod Recovery/TWRP tool before proceeding to installation.
5. Turn off device and disconnect from PC.
6. Press hold volume - and power button simultaneously to enter Recovery mode.
7. Wipe data or factory reset device.
8. Clear cache memory via 'wipe cache partition.'
9. Go back to Recovery mode.
10. Choose 'Advanced.'
11. Click 'wipe dalvik cache.'
12. Go back to Recovery mode again.
13. Click 'install zip from SD card.'
14. Click 'choose zip from SD card.'
15. Go to Android ROM .zip file in SD card and install.
16. Go to Google Apps .zip file in SD card and install.
17. When finished installing, go to '+++++Go Back+++++.'
18. Reboot device.
In a few minutes, the booting process shall be completed. Then head over to Settings > About phone verify the new firmware of the device which should now be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop CM12.
