‘Captain Marvel’ Cast Updates: Ronda Rousey campaigns for role of titular superhero; Director Kevin Smith backs her up

By

'Captain Marvel' is one of the most desired roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at present with mixed martial artist and actress Ronda Rousey actively campaigning to get it. Director and comic book expert Kevin Smith has expressed his total support for her cause.

According to Slash Film, Rousey admitted her desire to play the heroine during a session of Reddit's Ask Me Anything (AMA). She said, "I'd like to vie for Miss Marvel." It was reported that she likely meant Carol Danvers and not the current Kamala Khan who is portrayed as a 16-year old Pakistani-American girl.

Rousey also took to social media to share several fan art of her as Captain Marvel chosen from numerous edits done after her AMA interview. It was noted that she did have the physical prowess, physical appearance, and perfect age range to play the heroine. However, her lack of acting experience continues to be a matter of concern for fans. Her past on-screen work include 'The Expendables', 'Furious 7' and 'Entourage'.

An article by Time.com revealed that studio executives are careful when it comes to creating female-fronted superhero films. A leaked e-mail by Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter read that past movies with female heroines have proven to be financially disastrous and therefore, must be avoided.

Rousey's cause is not lost, though. According to Comic Book Resources, Kevin Smith conveyed his support for the actress during an interview with TMZ. He said, "She looks amazing. Lord knows she's one of the only people who would play a superhero that could actually beat the [censored] out of somebody. I would like to see it happen. She seems like she's got a good head on her shoulders. She followed her dream and, holy [censored], she's an ass-kicker. If that doesn't sound like a superhero, I don't know what is."

The director and screenwriter for numerous cult movie hits including 'Clerks', 'Mallrats', 'Chasing Amy' and 'Dogma' is also a celebrated comic book writer and enthusiast. His popular films back in the '90s even featured Marvel's Stan Lee in several cameos and references. He also usually stars in his own films as the character Silent Bob accompanied by his "hetero life mate" Jay, portrayed by real-life friend Jason Mewes.

'Captain Marvel' is a live-action adaptation of a comic book superheroine of the same name to be released on November 2, 2018. It will be the eighth installment in MCU's Phase Three. The script, written by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman, is currently under development.
