'Equalizer 2' will feature Denzel Washington as the series' main protagonist Robert McCall. Sony Pictures is currently in talks with Antoine Fuqua to return as director. Fuqua expressed his interest in returning for the second time to work with Washington.
The 60-year old American actor was confirmed to reprise his role as the former black ops commando McCall during CinemaCon last April, according to Movie Web. It was reported that this project will be his first ever try at starring in a cinematic series and would serve as a career milestone. Washington made his first debut in the film 'Carbon Copy' back in 1981 and went on to receive several accolades throughout the years including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and one Tony Award.
The films are based on a popular television series of the same name back in the '80s. The 'Equalizer 2' predecessor followed the story of McCall who faked his own death to escape his former life. After a supposed normal existence in Boston, he finds himself returning as a vigilante to defend the helpless and bring justice in a city of villains.
According to ComingSoon.net, Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first film, may possibly return for the sequel. He said, "There's been no other conversations about anybody else as far as I know. They've just been talking to me about it and talked to my agent about a deal and everybody's been negotiating their deals and the writer's been working on the script. Hopefully we'll have something to see soon." He added that with Washington on-board, all he needed now was a go signal from Sony to get things started.
In an article by The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is scheduled to be released for fall - specifically on September 29, 2017. It is only one of the several films under Sony's roster for the year 2017. The action-thriller will follow Nikolaj Arcel's 'The Dark Tower' adaptation, Joe Carnahan's 'Bad Boys 3' and the new 'Spider-Man' reboot by Marvel.
'Equalizer 2' is the follow-up to the 2014 neo-noir crime-thriller film starring Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloe Grace Moretz, Melissa Leo and Bill Pullman. The first film earned $192 million against a $55 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It is unclear whether some of the original cast will be returning for the sequel.
