'The Dark Tower' will be adapted for the big-screen by director Nikolaj Arcel. He will be joined by Ron Howard who is set to producing the first film in the planned series. Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem are among the actors whose names have been dropped several times to play the main protagonist Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger.
According to Geek Dad, Sony Pictures will be releasing the live-action adaptation of Stephen King's series of the same name in January 13, 2017. Official plot details and potential cast members have not yet been announced, however, the film will be the first in a planned series in Sony's franchise. Nikolaj Arcel of 'A Royal Affair', 'Truth About Men' and 'Island of Lost Souls' fame will be directing the first installment, with Oscar-winner Ron Howard attached as producer.
An article by Screen Crush may have hinted at a possible story arc for the book adaptation stating that it will follow main protagonist Roland Deschain's adventures through a desolate post-apocalyptic world to reach a mysterious Dark Tower with a companion he befriends along the way. The first film will be based on King's first novel in his fantasy-western series. 'The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger' is reported to be the easiest to adapt as subsequent stories will be more "fantastical" with elements of old Western and fantasy merging into one man's epic journey.
There have been no official casting announcements at present but Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem have been dropped to play Roland Deschain, according to Geek Girl Authority. In the novels, Roland is depicted as a man with a sense of heroism and practicality although he seems unsympathetic and impatient at times. He is also greatly traumatized by the death of his loved ones but this doesn't stop him from helping those in need and putting himself at risk for the sake of his companions.
'The Dark Tower' will be the first film in a planned series of Stephen King's ambitious and successful novels. The first book centers on Roland Deschain of Gilead on a long-time pursuit of his adversary 'the man in black'. The last gunslinger traverses a vast desert in search of the character and takes up Jake Chambers, a young boy from another world, as his traveling companion.
