'Blade Runner 2' is speculated to star Ryan Gosling in a currently unnamed new leading man, joining returning actor Harrison Ford in the casting roster. The young actor has been tagged to help save the highly criticized follow-up by Denis Villeneuve.
According to Den of Geek, Gosling will take up a new lead role previously helmed by veteran actor Harrison Ford. The 34-year old Canadian heartthrob has joined the cast as an unnamed protagonist while Ford is all set to reprise his role as Agent Rick Deckard, the first film's main character. Previous director Ridley Scott will not be returning and instead will be replaced by 'Sicario' filmmaker Denis Villeneuve with Hampton Fancher and Michael Green all set to write the sequel's screenplay.
Several media outlets, loyal fans and film critics have broadcasted their disdain for the planned follow-up deeming it redundant and ambitious since its predecessor was said to be better off as a standalone cinematic release. An article by Movie Pilot pointed to the casting of Gosling as a possible redeemer of the decades old neo-noir science-fiction film. In addition, it called for a deeper focus and insight on 'replicants' as well as the return of Green composer Vangelis to create yet another dreamy score to augment the new film's viewer experience.
In another article by io9.com, the return of Ford's Deckard can "compromise the integrity" of the original film by conflicting with the 'replicant' theory presented previously. The first release introduced 'replicants' as bioengineered robots who lived a predetermined lifespan - Deckard was one. It was reiterated that the possibility of adding to the fictional world's origins is a rather foolish and ambitious one as it runs the risk of ruining an otherwise original and complete story.
'Blade Runner 2' is a planned sequel to the big-screen adaptation of the author Philip K. Dick's novel entitled 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep'. The first film debuted on June 25, 1982 under the direction of Scott Ridley and was received positively by critics and audiences alike. It grossed $33 million against a $28 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
