'Kong: Skull Island' may be pushing through with a planned Kong vs. Godzilla plot as Legendary Entertainment is said to be in negotiations to move the film from Universal to Warner Bros.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary, Universal and Warner Bros. are currently in negotiations to move the upcoming film from Universal to Warner Bros. It was speculated that the aim for all studios would be the creation of a monster universe combining the classic stories of Kong, the gigantic ape, and Godzilla, the colossal sea monster. 'Godzilla' is under a Legendary-Warner Bros. partnership and having 'Kong: Skull Island' under the same studio would make a planned merge easier.

In another article by Variety, Lenedary declined to comment further on the matter. Plot details for the sequel remain scarce but it had been previously reported that the main setting will be in Kong's mysterious home in Skull Island. It will follow a group of new explorers who venture deep into the island to uncover Kong's origins.

It was reported by Deadline that 'Kong: Skull Island' will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The writer-director is best known for his film 'The Kings of Summer' that screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the Dallas International Film Festival and the Cleveland International Film Festival. He will be working with cast members Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, Corey Hawkins, and John Mitchell.

'Kong: Skull Island' is the sequel to the 'King Kong' series reboot first launched in 2005. Its predecessor was written, directed and produced by Peter Jackson and was a remake of the 1933 film of the same name. It earned $550 million in combined global sales against a $207 budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

The fantasy monster/adventure franchise first debuted in a feature film simply entitled 'King Kong' back in March 2, 1933. It follows the story of a gigantic ape, the last of his kind, deemed the "eighth wonder of the world" because of his colossal size and unmatched strength. To date, the franchise continues to spawn numerous sequels and remain successful at the box office.
