The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been building up its movies towards the two-part Avengers Infinity War with its ever growing array of interacting characters. However, Guardians of the Galaxy remain farthest from the Avenger action. This is expected to change as Starlord and hopefully the whole team is expected to join the Avengers: Infinity War, since they are protecting the Power Stone.
According to Movie Pilot, rumors may be from all directions but even simple logical connection should bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Avengers: Infinity War. One, they are responsible for the purple Power Stone, and second, they have been the closest to encounter Thanos in the storyline.
Starlord and his crew can play a number of roles in themovie. Speculations range from "surprise appearance to save the day" or to "pick up the pieces after a crushing defeat" perhaps.
Coming Soon reported that Josh Brolin, who has been playing Thanos, confirmed that Marvel has been working to band all the superheroes of the MCU towards the war against Marvel's biggest baddie. Thanos or the Mad Titan's aim to bring together the six Infinity stones has been the overarching all Marvel Phase 1 and 2 movies.
Joe and Anthony Russo will be on the helm of Avengers: Infinity War 1 and 2, and said that the films intend to "bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax." If it is everyone against Thanos, then the Guardians of the Galaxy are expected, along with the other superheroes seen and will be seen in the MCU.
In a feature by The A.V. Club, the Avengers: Infinity War is set to be the all-out war between supervillain Thanos and the Avengers, which constantly changes in number, with the Infinity Stones in the center of the action. In addition to that, the article also summarizes what is seen in the Avengers: Age of Ultron Blu-ray release: what these Infinity Stones are and where they are currently in the MCU.
There are currently 4 stones accounted for in the MCU and the 2 are expected to show up in the upcoming movies of Marvel Phase 3 before Avengers: Infinity War part 1. When these stones unite, superhero numbers are in danger of decimation.
Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is slated for release in theaters on May 4, 2018; Part 2will open on May 3, 2019. Marvel will have a couple of other stand-alone movies and a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 before the first part of Infinity War. Details if Chris Pratt's Starlord and Guardians of the Galaxy will join the climax of MCU will surely be clearer by then, or who will be likely killed in the battle for the Infinity Stones.
