The movie "Captive" will be shown initially in Germany on September 17, 2015. David Oyelowo plays Brian Nichols while Kate Mara plays the victim Ashley Smith. David says that the motion picture is faith-based as Ashley shares her thought on how the nightmarish ordeal changed her life. The film is inspired by Ashley Smith's memoir entitled "Unlikely Angel" released by Paramount Pictures.
The Detroit Free Press shares that the film "Captive" is about the psychopath Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) who terrified Atlanta in 2005. Based on true-to-life events about a withdrawn Nichols who was supposed to stand trial for rape charges. Basing his decisions on impulse and adrenaline, he overpowers her female police escort and takes her issued sidearm. He then goes on a shooting rampage killing the judge, a sheriff's deputy and a court reporter in Atlanta's downtown courthouse. Nichols then takes off in different vehicles that he uses as a getaway, confusing law enforcement who are pursuing him. He fatally shoots an Atlanta federal agent in the process while taking his truck. The killer ends up in Ashley Smith's apartment where he held her hostage in her own home for seven hours.
AZCentral reports that the reason for David Oyelowo in taking the role in "Captive" is because of the story itself. The glimmer of hope, redemption, faith and gaining a purpose during and after the tribulation of the event in the life of Ashley Smith was riveting. What makes it even better is the reality of two persons with totally different lives that somehow led one finding salvation. A second chance, David adds, where faith can bring you from darkness to light no matter how broken one is.
Ashley Smith is a single mother who chose drugs over her daughter. For years she believed that God didn't love a person like her. She joins a support group with hopes to overcome her addiction when a sponsor handed her a copy of a bestselling book "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. The book mainly talks about abandoning one's agenda and accepting God's plan. Without any hesitation, Ashley tosses it in a garbage bin. But somehow, not by coincidence, the book is given back to her while at work. This book is what she uses as a way to pass time during her ordeal with her captor. Both their lives will never be the same after that.
She is quoted saying, "I'm 100 percent sure God was in control. He reached down into my apartment that night into the pits of hell that my life had become and He said, 'I love you. I'm going to show you that I love you because you're ready for me to show you that I love you.' And I promise you, if God did it for me, He can do it for anybody else." Ashley even said that the film almost didn't push through but in her faith she said "Look, I don't want it to happen at all if it's not going to glorify God. Not at all, period.'"
"Captive" is a movie based on real life circumstances taken from the memoir of Ashley Smith. It puts a person faith in God to the ultimate test. It shows about a person who has a chance to live their lives for the better no matter how bad their situation is. David Oyelowo and Kate Mara are the main casts released by Paramount Pictures. Oyelowo says it is a faith-based film set to inspire moviegoers on September 17, 2015 in Germany.
