British actress Emily Blunt made a comment that she's not entirely thrilled over her newly-attained US citizenship. After her remarks caused a backlash over the online world, the actress tried to extend her apologies.
During a Thursday morning interview on Today, Blunt said that she was sorry for the joke she previously stated and that it wasn't meant to offend anyone. "It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense, so I really apologize to those that I caused offense," Blunt explained to the Today's host Savannah Guthrie during the chat. She defended herself by stating, "It was just an offhand joke. I think I'll probably leave the political jokes to late night or something."
Beforehand, the "Into The Woods" actress heated up sorts of reactions this week from critics following her citizenship remarks. It was noted that the incident happened in an interview after she officially become a naturalized American citizen. "I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ''This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'' Blunt jokingly stated to The Hollywood Reporter when she was asked about GOP frontrunner Donald Trump.
She also claimed, "I'm not sure I'm entirely thrilled about becoming an American. People ask me about the whole day. They were like, 'Oh it must have been so emotional'. I was like, 'It wasn't, it was sad. I like being British."
But according to USA Today, on Fox & Friends, the conservative network's morning show, thinks her jokes were a way to criticize the Republicans and at citizenship. On Tuesday, co-host Anna Kooiman was frank about Blunt's statement. "Get out", the host mentioned.
Kooman directly followed up her comment saying, "Well you know what, then why don't you leave Hollywood, California, and let some American women take on the roles that you're getting, because Americans are watching your movies and lining your pockets." Steve Doocy also stated that Emily Blunt just Dixie Chicked herself and just alienated half of America that will eventually think twice before they watch her movies.
Meanwhile, although a lot of the criticisms are bombarded to the actress' camp, many still take her side. Some of her fans showed her sympathy over their tweets. And aside for her apology, Blunt also swore that the citizenship ceremony was a big part of her life.
