Stephen King's The Dark Tower Update: 2017 release date confirmed; Nikolaj Arcel on board to get behind director's chair

A movie adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower is currently in the works under Sony. After jumping from one movie studio to another during the last couple of years, it is believed to be moving forward with its official release date announcement, and a confirmed director.

Roland Deschain's adventures are set to be adapted into the big screen as A Royal Affair director, Nikolaj Arcel, was confirmed to helm the first film in the franchise. As reported by Den of Geek, Arcel is also set to re-write the script with Anders Thomas Jensen from the original script penned by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinker.

Also, according to Geeks of Doom, the film has been slated for a January 13, 2017 release. The first film in the franchise is set to be produced by Ron Howard along with Erica Higgins and Brian Grazer. Howard was previously linked to direct the upcoming film, however, he is currently working on 'Inferno', the third movie in the Da Vinci Code franchise.

No confirmed actors have been attached to the film yet, however, claims have made their rounds that actors Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem are the top names considered for the role of Roland Deschain. The upcoming film will be based on the first book in King's series titled,'The Gunslinger'.

Meanwhile, as cited in the previous report, Stephen King also recently revealed that he won't let any writer take over the series he created when the time comes that he is no longer able to do so in the future.

The series of the Dark Tower tells the story of a gunslinger named Roland Deschain who embarks on a journey to The Dark Tower in order to stop the evil plans of the Crimson King. Aside from the upcoming trilogy, a tv series is also said to be in development for Stephen King's series. More details about the upcoming film are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
