Android 5.1.1 Update Now Available for Moto X, Moto X Pure Edition Users

By

Moto X finally receives the anticipated but already late Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the handset. The update comes after a year it has been officially released and while Google is preparing to launch the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow update and the new Nexus line of devices before the month ends.

Android 5.1.1 has been around for quite some time now. It has been already released to several flagship devices from LG, Samsung and Google's own Nexus devices. Now, Moto X users will be able to join in on the fun, even though it has been several months late.

What's disappointing is that the update comes from mobile carrier Verizon, which means that Moto X users that are not subscribed to Verizon could have a hard time getting the update. The Moto X update software version is 222.21.39, according to Android Headlines.

Still, it's good news for Moto X users under Verizon. The Android 5.1.1 update brings several new features to the table such as the new Material Design which includes new icons, animations, themes and widgets.

Moto X users will also be able to make use of the new Android Smart Lock. This new feature allows Android 5.1.1 users to pair their device with another trusted device, Kpop Starz reported. Moreover, the new Android Lollipop update brings security updates for the device.

Why did it take so long for the Moto X to receive the Android 5.1.1 update? One of the main problems of the Android ecosystem is the very diverse fragmentation. This means that an update would have to be modified by OEMs and carriers to fit with their devices.

Executives from Motorola have put the blame on hardware incompatibilities, according to Green Bot. Nevertheless, the update is now here from Verizon.

The new Android 5.1.1 update is now available for the Moto X 2013 and the Moto X Pure Edition handsets. A new line of devices under Nexus is also expected to be released before the month ends.
