'Top Gun 2' will feature leading man Tom Cruise as Maverick Mitchell. He said that he would confirm his involvement in the new film as long as less special effects will be used. Original film producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be returning and has announced that the sequel is finally underway.
Tom Cruise has confirmed his interest in reprising his role as the iconic naval aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. He admitted his conditions to star as the leading protagonist as long as the new film will avoid too much use of CGI effects, according to an article by the Guardian. He said that practical effects used in the first film such as pilots flying real jets would be a more welcoming option since relying heavily on CGI is already old news for audiences.
It was reported that the new storyline will involve the clash of traditional flyers against modern aerial drones without pilots and that it will be filmed in 3D as well as shot for IMAX. Pre-production is already under way and the screenplay is already in the works as announced by Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison.
According to The National, original director Tony Scott first announced the plan for the sequel last 2010. Production somehow went into a standstill. By 2012, Scott met his demise in an unfortunate incident in Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles and eventually left the fate of 'Top Gun 2' in limbo.
However, returning producer Jerry Bruckheimer remained persistent on the possibility of the project despite the odds and obstacles presented. The film and television producer later announced that the follow-up will be pushing through after trying to get it made three decades after, according to NME.
He said, "Don Simpson and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. Tom Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."
'Top Gun 2' is a planned sequel for the 1986 action-drama film directed by the late Tony Scott. The first film proved to be a certified mainstream hit earning $356 million against a $15 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It received mixed reviews from critics but garnered several accolades including an Academy Award for Best Music and Best Original Song.
