Mission Impossible 6 is currently in the works under Paramount and might begin filming in summer next year, according to Tom Cruise. Rumors have it that a new director might helm the latest film and it could be the last installment in the franchise.
As reported by /Film, Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore revealed previously that a sequel is currently in development given the strong international brand. The fifth installment in the franchise, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, grossed more than $600 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
As cited in the previous report, Cruise also confirmed the news and even added that filming might begin in summer. If the movie meets the 2016 release date, the gap between the fifth and the sixth film would be the shortest among the other films since previous sequels in the franchise were released at least 4 years in between each other.
As observed in the past movies of the MI series, it is also highly possible that a new director could be chosen to helm the next film. According to the Rogue Nation director, Christopher McQuarrie, new direction for the films in the franchise has contributed to its growth and added that he feels sorry for the next director.
"First and foremost, as you pointed out, one of the things that people love about this series is that it's a different director for every chapter", McQuarrie said. "And they are very, very challenging movies to make and, with each movie, it becomes more challenging for the next person. And when I was watching Tom on the side of the A400, the first thing I said when he landed was, 'Boy, I feel sorry for the next director'", he added.
The recently released Rogue Nation elicited positive reviews and became a box office success. According to a report by Master Herald, the new movie could be Ethan Hunt's last run in the big screen as the franchise's star Tom Cruise is not getting any younger and it could serve as the franchise's concluding film. However, these claims continue to be fan based and have not been confirmed or denied.
For the upcoming Mission Impossible 6, Tom Cruise is expected to return as the IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Aside from Cruise, no other actors have been named yet but more details about the film are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
