A teaser video by LG hints to a dual-screen smartphone rumored to launch on LG's special October 1 event. There are rumors that a new foldable phone by the company is currently in the making.
According to International Business Times, the LG 15-second teaser clip showed a glimpse of the upcoming flagship and the release date on October 1 at 11 A.M, ending with the tagline "Be You". The South Korean-based manufacturer sent out film-themed press invitations earlier which could point to the device focusing on media consumption.
Reliable leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) revealed that the new LG phone will be called V10. It will be adorned with a 16MP rear camera and a 5MP front snapper. It is rumored to offer similar hardware and size of LG G4. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC will power the V10, along with 3GB RAM and 64GB memory expandable via microSD.
The LG V10 is expected to come with a secondary screen above the 5.7" QHD main display. The auxiliary screen will reportedly display notifications when the main screen is turned off or being used for other purposes. Adding a second display could result to improvements on the phone's battery consumption, however, this feature might not be enough to attract purchases for the phone as per The Motley Fool's report.
If rumors are true, the V10 will not be the first device to feature secondary displays. It was preceded by Samsung's Continuum in 2010. The Continuum had an auxiliary display located at the bottom of the main screen and showed information similar to ticker displays in cable news channels. Unfortunately, the feature did not sell among consumers and Samsung abandoned the design in succeeding devices.
Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have curved edges that function in a similar manner - displaying notifications without turning the main screen on. However, reviews say that this feature is hard to enable and gives limited information.
Russian company Yotaphone has its own two-screen phones. Its devices have a front LCD screen and supports an e-ink screen that can prolong battery life.
LG's announcement of releasing a dual-screen flagship is not too surprising since the company is known for coming up with different ideas. An example is the LG G Flex in 2013, featuring the first flexible curved-screen in the history of smartphones.
Ventures Africa reported that LG and Samsung plan to integrate foldable display technology to their future phones. The companies are reportedly working on a new hinge system which allows the phones to be folded without breaking. LG's foldable display is rumored to have a foldable, flexible touch panel and plastic board. Neither LG nor Samsung have confirmed the rumors.
The mobile tech world anticipates the upcoming LG V10 flagship with dual-screen display at the LG event on October 1. LG, along with Google, will also unveil the LG Nexus 5X on September 29.
