Filming has wrapped up for Independence Day: Resurgence and Roland Emmerich recently hinted about the release of a trailer as well as details about the film's plot. A new comic book prequel is also expected to be released that will fill the gaps between the events of the two films.
A couple of weeks ago, Emmerich shared on Instagram that principal photography of the film has officially concluded with a photo of a double rainbow and talking to Cinemablend recently, Emmerich revealed that a first look at the film's trailer will probably be released this Christmas.
Also, in his talk with Collider, Emmerich spilled details about Independence Day: Resurgence and the franchise.He revealed how much of the actual alien population were killed in the first film as well as the plan for the upcoming film.
"Well, it's only like one of the hives, like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It's not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it's a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had 20 years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight", Emmerich said.
While it was previously revealed that the film will be set several years after the first attack of the alien species wherein nations have united and an immense defense system was created from the scrap materials salvaged from the first attack. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that a comic book prequel will also be released. It will be set after the events of the first film and will fill in the 20 year-gap between the 2 films in the franchise.
According to the trade, a publisher reportedly revealed that the currently unnamed comic book prequel will center on a "rich psychological prison drama" set after the first film. However, aside from that, no further details were released about who will be featured as the prisoner in the comic book or information regarding the comic book writers.
Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Bill Pullman are back and will be joined by newest members Maika Monroe, Jessie T. Usher, and Liam Hemsworth among many others who earned good commendations from the director.
Roland Emmerich is also back in the director's chair for Independence Day: Resurgence with screenplay written by Carter Blanchard. The film is expected to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
