Disney has decided not to pursue its plans for "Tron 3" after announcing beforehand that it will pursue a third sequel earlier this year. However, Garrett Hedlund thinks there is still a possibility that the third installment will come eventually but did not give any details about it.
When "Tron Legacy" did not meet or exceed results that were expected in the box office, there was already a possibility that producers would think twice in making "Tron 3", according to The Disney Blog. Things got a little bit brighter when speculations arose earlier in this year that the third sequel will soon start production. But hopes for the follow-up film were cut short when word came out in May that Disney will not be pursuing the third installment presumably because of the underrated performance of "Tomorrowland."
Flickering Myth shared that the stars of the "TRON" series Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde as well as director Joseph Kosinski were already committed for "Tron 3." But with the uncertainty of producers on pursuing the third sequel, things are left hanging at the moment. Hedlund was asked about this while making his promotional rounds for his upcoming film "Pan." He says he wasn't told that it was "totally dead." He also adds, "Ever since we did "Legacy", we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting. Disney needed to have the right story to go forward. I think it was going to introduce some things that were as exciting as "Legacy" was and then some, though."
SuperHeroStuff.com adds that Garrett Hedlund teased more about "Tron 3." He says that Disney could do the follow-up film anytime soon and he would most certainly "jump back in" if that happens.
Fans will have to satisfy their desire with the animated series "TRON: Uprising" as of the moment. Of course, thoughts from Garrett Hedlund could be somewhat of a teaser more than anything else to create some hype until such time that there would be something more concrete coming from Disney about "Tron 3."
