A month after "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter revealed his plans for creating a spinoff for the well-watched drama, fans can now look forward to a more exciting offshoot. The showrunner has revealed new details about the spinoff’s core storyline, the Mayans – the Hispanic group which shared quite a violent past with SAMCRO.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Sutter hashed out his upcoming project – while previewing the vibe of the Spanish-speaking Mayans and what new things it can offer to television. “It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand,“ he said.
Sutter also noted that the Mayan spinoff is a “contemporary piece” and “not a prequel”. This element, if pursued, may open interesting opportunities for the showrunner and the creative team behind it. He shared in a report from Entertainment Weekly that longtime "Sons of Anarchy" fans can even expect for some old faces popping up on his latest TV project. "It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that,” Kutter said.
According to Screen Rant, the executive producer’s decision to center the spinoff’s focus on the Mayans is a smart move, allowing that it to offer something unique to the viewers. “Sutter makes a good point in mentioning that a show about the Mayans could give fans a different perspective at the world of the original show, in the way that Better Call Saul works as a Breaking Bad spinoff but also stands remarkably on its own,” the site commented.
The offshoot project of Sons of Anarchy will tackle the Mayans storyline, according to creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter. The showrunner also noted that he will be writing the series with a modern vibe, rather than a prequel approach.
The official premiere date of the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff is yet to be announced. The FX Network also hasn’t release a statement about filming locations and production period of the upcoming series.
