ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” season three opened by exploring on the Secret Warriors storyline as well as resolving the aftermath of Simmons’ disappearance during last May’s finale.
Series star Clark Gregg, who portrays Agent Coulson, chatted with TV Line to hash out the addition of the Secret Warriors to the show in season 3. “I love the idea of mutants in whatever form it takes. It means that people evolve differently than the rest of us in the broader metaphor of the comic book universe, and they have powers,” the actor said.
He also shared that the aforementioned arc will make for an interesting turn as the series progress. “What’s cool about the Inhumans is some of them take a while to come online. They’re very internal or have to do with prescience or super strength. You never know what each person’s going to have,” he added.
The Sept. 29th season premiere also gave answers to Agent Simmons’ mysterious location. While the setting seems to look like she’s in another planet, seeing her alive and breathing certainly brought a sigh of relief to the Fitz-Simmons fandom.
Her portrayer, Elizabeth Henstridge, echoed her thoughts about where the creative team opted to transport Simmons after being consumed by the Kree Monolith in season 2’s finale. “It was so cool. I hadn’t thought of that. Everything that happens, I hadn’t thought of that as an option,” the actress shared in a report from Entertainment Weekly.
However, viewers of the Joss Whedon-produced series should not expect for the same Jemma as season three moves forward. “She’s hardened. She’s had to face things that she never would’ve imagined, also by herself without Fitz [Iain de Caestecker], so she’s definitely changed, stronger and kind of damaged,” Henstridge said about the shift in her character’s perspective.
Next week, the team will up their ante in finding the intrepid scientist, according to series star Chloe Bennet. “We’re all gonna be pretty adamant on seeing what happens with Simmons, so the team is gonna go to great lengths to try and get her back,” the actress revealed in an interview with Variety.
Meanwhile, the pilot episode of the show's third run, titled “Law of Nature,” was written by co-showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. “Agents of SHIELD” airs every Tuesday at 8PM on ABC.
