‘Cabin In The Woods 2’ Updates: Copyright lawsuit against film dismissed; Director Drew Goddard reveals no sequel is planned just yet

'Cabin In The Woods 2' may or may not happen, according to director Drew Goddard. When asked about the possibility, he admitted that the original film was not intended to have a follow-up. The copyright lawsuit filed against the film had recently been dismissed as well.

According to Den of Geek, director Drew Goddard talked about the possibility of a sequel for his critically acclaimed comedy-horror film during a promotional tour for 'The Martian'. He admitted that although his first film managed to hit the box office jackpot and received praise from critics, they never intended to do a follow-up for it. He didn't outright reject the idea of one though.

Goddard said, "...the fun thing about Cabin is, the rules are pretty crazy. We get away with a lot of crazy stuff. So I'm sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to. I know Joss [Whedon] and I both feel like we don't want to tarnish what we did with the first one. With a sequel, we'd only do it if it made us laugh hard enough, I suppose"

The 2012 film was intended to be a satire on grisly slasher flicks and stereotypical releases from the horror genre. It was directed by Goddard with the screenplay written in collaboration with Joss Whedon. The duo previously worked together on the highly popular television series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and its spin-off 'Angel'.

Goddard made it clear in another interview with Cinema Blend that he didn't want to put out a sequel just for the sake of it, although, he had been approached with the idea before. He said that "not everything needs to be a franchise" and that good films may need to be left alone.

The $10-million copyright lawsuit against Goddard, Whedon, Lionsgate, and Mutant Enemy was filed last April but has been recently dismissed, according to Entertainment Weekly. It was alleged that 'Cabin In The Woods' was adapted unlawfully from author Peter Gallagher's self-published book, 'The Little White Trip: A Night in the Pines'.

It was then dismissed on grounds that although both works bore common horror-genre similarities, no other auxiliary evidence other than those presented was strong enough to push the issue further.

'Cabin In The Woods 2' may not happen. There is not official announcement stating otherwise as of now. The first film starred Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Sigourney Weaver.
