'The Revenant' officially released its latest trailer that featured Leonardo DiCaprio being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his hunting companions. Insiders also revealed that filming was torture and that it was "a living hell of a shoot".
According to Vanity Fair, the latest trailer for director Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming western thriller shows leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in various scenes suggesting grief, treachery and revenge. In contrast to the first trailer that dropped, the latest one put more emphasis on the story behind the events that transpired instead of merely setting the gritty tone and locale.
DiCaprio, who plays frontiersman Hugh Glass is shown caught in a bear attack, mauled then buried alive in the American wilderness after his companions robbed and left him for dead. Tom Hardy plays John Fitzgerald, Hugh Glass' former closest confidant who ends up betraying him.
According to The Wrap, the film is inspired by real-life events from the 19th century that followed the story of Glass. Oscar-winning director Iñárritu will be helming 'The Revenant', one of 20th Century Fox's two Oscar contenders.
The filmmaker is best known for his work on the critically acclaimed 'Birdman' together with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Lubezki, on the other hand, is praised for his work on films such as 'Gravity', 'The Tree of Life', 'Children of Men', 'The New World' and 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events'.
Several rumors have emerged regarding Iñárritu's unconventional directing methods that made filming difficult for the cast and crew of the upcoming film. According to The Guardian, insiders claimed that the director forced them to endure the freezing conditions of the Canadian wilds and that it was "a living hell of a shoot". Iñárritu's determination not to employ too much special effects and Lubezki's need to film in natural light allegedly brought out the hardships everyone had to tolerate.
'The Revenant' is an upcoming adventure-drama western scheduled to be released in January 2016. It is based on author Michael Punke's novel of the same name and adapted for the big-screen by Iñárritu and Mark L. Smith. It stars DiCaprio, Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Lukas Haas, Kristoffer Joner and Brad Carter.
