'Mulan' is a planned live-action adaptation of the classic animated film by Disney. Casting speculations continue and the newest rumor suggests that Jamie Chung will be playing the lead role. Chung, who portrays Mulan in the hit television series 'Once Upon A Time', may reprise her role as the titular character in the big-screen adaptation.
Ever since news of the live-version had been dropped, there continues to be no official announcement regarding casting. It was reported by Variety that its project will be based on the script done by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek and has been set-up by Chris Bender and J.C. Spink.
The original 1998 animated musical focused on the Chinese warrior Fa Mulan who disguised herself as a man in order to replace her aging father who was drafted for war. It starred Ming-Na Wen as Mulan, Eddie Murphy as Mushu, and BD Wong as Captain Li Shang among others. It also earned several prestigious accolades including Annie Awards for Best Animated Feature as well as nominations for both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
According to Moviepilot, a new fan favorite to play the title role has emerged. Jamie Chung, who is currently playing Mulan in Season 2 of 'Once Upon A Time', may reprise her role as the legendary female warrior in Disney's live-version. The actress of Korean descent is known for her past work in films including 'Premium Rush', 'Eden', 'Suckerpunch' and 'Dragonball Evolution'. She broke out into the Hollywood scene as a reality television star in MTV's 'The Real World'.
Another star contender for the lead role is 'Glee' star Jenna Ushkowitz. According to Movie News Guide, the actress made headlines on the rumor mill after a petition discouraging possible whitewashing gained enough supporters. Ushkowitz is also of Korean descent as opposed to Mulan who is Chinese.
