Tom Clancy’s fictional character, Jack Ryan, is headed to the small screens. Amazon has given the action-thriller a straight to series order on Tuesday. The new project hails from Carlton Cuse of "The Strain", Graham Roland of " Lost", Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media, and Paramount TV.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will not be following the same direction of the "Jack Ryan" films. Instead, a contemporary approach will be taken using the novels as a source material. Viewers will be introduced to Ryan as a CIA analyst/operative in his prime.
Deadline addressed the Amazon’s decision to give the Jack Ryan TV adaptation a series commitment, citing that the strategy could produce more opportunities for the streaming giant. “Amazon is considered a suitable home for Jack Ryan as the online retailer sells Clancy’s books as well as the Jack Ryan movies on DVD and is the streaming home for most or all of them, creating opportunities for a multi-platform push for the show,” the publication noted.
The "Jack Ryan" films have spawned four franchises over the years – Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine have been tapped to portray the iconic character on the big screens. The latest 2013 adaptation, "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" which starred Pine, fared successfully earning almost $1 billion in the international market.
As to who portrays the titular role for the TV adaptation, Comic Book reported that “no actors have been tagged as possibilities for this version yet”.
Some of the fans of the franchise are already excited with Amazon's take on the action film. With the brilliant minds already on board for the project, it is expected that "Jack Ryan" series will be as successful as its big screen adaptations.
